History

Villas were the most popular new home design in New Zealand from the 1880s through to World War 1.

The villa design arose as the development of New Zealand cities and towns demanded more spacious family homes.

It became the favoured design of housing, filling the first suburbs in the colonial towns and villages in the 1880s as urban populations increased.

The villa was almost the exclusive style of housing in use during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The earliest villas were simple in form, but grew in complexity and decoration over time in responds to demand from increasingly affluent consumers.

The villa was constructed almost entirely of timber (including fixtures and fittings), with a metal roof. The expansive verandas, intricate fretwork and decorative timber elements being a key style. There are over 85,000 villas in New Zealand.
